INSTRUCTIONS TO CONTRIBUTORS
1.The Taiwan
Journal of Medical Sciences is pleased to publish scientific papers in all fields
of medicine. The articles should not have been nor shall not be published
elsewhere.
2. We solicit the following categories of articles:
review articles (invited only), original articles, case reports and brief
communications. Original articles should contain an abstract, introduction,
materials and methods, results, discussion, acknowledgments and references
in sequence. Case reports should contain an abstract, introduction, case
presentation, discussion and references in sequence. There is no fixed
format for review articles and brief communications, but references and
abstract must be included.
3. The manuscript must be written in English and
should be typed double spaced on white bond paper. The first letter of
English words which appear in a Table and Fig. and in the title of Tables
and Fig. should be in capitals (except prepositions,
conjunctions and articles).
4. The title page should contain the tilte, name(s) of the author(s), affiliation(s) and a
running title (not exceeding 50 letters and spaces). The name for
correspondence and his/her address and phone number should also be on this
page.
5. The manuscript should have an abstract (not more
than 400 words), key words (not more than 3 key words) and a summary (approximately
800 words).
6. Numerals should be Arabic
and they should be spelled out in the beginning of a sentence.
7. All measures should be presented in metric units,
e.g. cm, mm, nm, I, dl, ml, µ1, kg, g, mg, µg, ng,
pg, kcal, ( )。C
etc. Symbols and abbreviations in common are preferred e.g. mol, mol/l or
M, mg/100rnl, or mg/dl, A (absorbence), Ci (Curie), Hz (hertz), 32P, 14C, [32P]AMP,
[1-14C]
acetic acid. Other symbols and abbreviations,
please refer to IUPAC-IUB Document No. 1 (Arch Biochem
Biophys 115: 1-12, 1966). For papers in
chemistry, please consult the recent issue of the Journal of Organic
Chemistry.
8. References should be placed consecutively in
order as they are cited in the text. If the references are from journals,
they should be presented in this sequence: name(s) of author(s), title of
article, name of journal, volume number, beginning page and ending page,
year of publication. If from books, they should be in this sequence:
name(s) of author(s), title of article, title of book, name(s) of
editor(s), edition, publisher, place, opening page and ending page, year of
publication,Abbreviations in the form used by
Index Medicus.

9. References in the text
should quote the last name(s)of the author(s).
When a paper referred to has two authors, the names of both two should be
given when reference is made. Three or more authors should always be referred
to as in the following example, Brown et al(12)。
10. Type
each table on a separate sheet. Vertical lines should be omitted and horizontal
lines should also be limited.
11. All
graphs, drawings or photographs are to be in original (not smaller than 3 x
5 in.). Photos
should be on smooth photographic paper and numbered on the back with soft
pencil and the title, name(s) of author(s) and the orientation indicated.
Line drawings should be drawn with black India ink on white paper.
Photomicrographs should give the magnification,
12. The
journal will assume all cost for articles of four pages (review articles of
eight-pages) or less (including two black and white illustrations). If the
article contains ten pages or more, the authors must assume financial
responsibility for the cost of the extra pages. Any color illustrations
must be paid by the author(s).
13. The
author(s) is given 50 copies of reprints of the article without charge. If
more reprints are needed, they must be ordered during the fist
proofreading.
14. If the
manuscripts do not meet the requirements of the Journal, the editors are authorized
to make changes or
return the manuscripts.
15. Manuscripts submitted for
publication are reviewed by members of the Editorial Staff and Review
Committee
to determine acceptability for publication
in the Journal. The article once published is copyrighted by the
Journal. No part of the article may be reproduced by any means
without written permission.

17. Manuscripts including Tables and
Figures should be sent in triplicate (original and two copies, photographs
must be
original), as well as a consent form signed by all the authors. The manuscript
components should be
arranged in this sequence: title page, abstract, text, acknowledgments, references,
tables, legends, for illustrations, and summary,
